Most people believe that acting is just about pretending to be someone else. But what if the techniques used by professional actors could help you master your emotions, make better decisions, and unlock a new level of self-awareness?
James Rojas-Taylor discovered this powerful connection between acting and real-life success, and he's on a mission to share it with the world. From his time in the Marine Corps to performing in his off-Broadway play, James has developed a mental and emotional literacy system that can transform lives.
In a fascinating conversation on the It's Your Choice Podcast, James discussed the seven essential questions that can help anyone navigate life with more confidence, clarity, and purpose.
A Four-Year-Old's Realization About Eternity
James' journey into mental mastery started when he was just four years old. During a midnight mass with his parents, he had an intense realization: if eternity had no end, then it also had no middle—meaning existence was a perpetual beginning. This idea shook him.
"I was afraid of boredom. What do you do with eternity when you've done everything a thousand times over?" he recalled.
His response? He instinctively treated his mind like a computer, creating internal "programs" to help him process the world. This led to developing what he calls "suits" and "bubbles"—mental exercises that helped him step into different perspectives, process emotions, and anticipate challenges before they happened.
Little did he know he was building a foundation for the mental and emotional literacy system he now teaches.
The Power of Acting in Real Life
James' path eventually led him to acting, where he unknowingly tapped into one of the most powerful personal development tools available.
"Acting isn't just about performance—it's about understanding human behavior at the deepest level," James explained. "Actors don't just pretend to be someone else. They train their minds to step into any role with full emotional and mental awareness. Imagine if you could do that in your everyday life!"
Through years of acting, James realized that the same techniques used to break down characters could be applied to real-life challenges—giving people the tools to think more clearly, regulate their emotions, and make smarter decisions.
The 7 Questions That Can Change Everything
One of the most groundbreaking concepts James shared is a seven-question framework derived from the teachings of acting legend Konstantin Stanislavski. Actors use these questions to get into character, but James realized they can also be used to gain mental and emotional clarity in real life.
Here are the seven questions:
1️⃣ Who am I? – Establishes self-awareness in the moment.
2️⃣ Where am I? – Helps you understand your environment and circumstances.
3️⃣ When is it? – Contextualizes the moment in time.
4️⃣ What do I want? – Identifies your goal or intention.
5️⃣ Why do I want it? – Clarifies motivation and emotional drivers.
6️⃣ How do I get it? – Focuses on the strategy and action steps.
7️⃣ What's in my way? – Defines obstacles (real and imagined).
By running through these questions before making a decision, dealing with a challenge, or navigating a high-pressure situation, you gain clarity that most people never experience.
"Most people don't fail because they lack intelligence," James said. "They fail because they lack a process for making sense of their emotions and decisions. This framework gives you that process."
Why Most Obstacles Are Just Illusions
One of the biggest takeaways from James' system is that most obstacles don't exist—at least, not in the way we think they do.
"People often start at question 7: What's in my way? Before they even define what they want or why they want it," James explained. "They're building roadblocks before they've even stepped onto the road."
I agreed, noting how often we create limitations in our own minds. "We imagine obstacles that aren't real, and they stop us before we start. Fear of failure, fear of what others think, fear of the unknown—these are illusions we feed ourselves."
By starting with question 1 (Who am I?), people can build a strong foundation of self-awareness, making it easier to separate real challenges from imagined ones.
How You Can Start Using This Today
The best part about James' system is that anyone can use it—right now.
✅ Before making a big decision, ask yourself the seven questions.
✅ Feeling stuck? Go back to Who am I? and What do I want?
✅ Facing fear? Reassess whether the obstacle is real or imagined.
✅ Want to improve communication? Practice active listening and emotional awareness like an actor.
The key is repetition. Just like learning to drive, it may feel awkward initially, but over time, these questions will become second nature—helping you navigate life with clarity, confidence, and emotional mastery.
The Mind Is Your Greatest Asset
"Your brain is the most powerful supercomputer on the planet—so why not learn how to use it properly?" James asked.
His discovery of acting techniques as mental and emotional literacy tools is a game-changer. You can unlock unlimited potential by learning how to train your mind, regulate your emotions, and approach life with a structured thought process.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain, remember this:
👉 Start with 'Who am I?'
👉 Take it one step at a time.
👉And never let imagined obstacles stop you from taking action.
Your best self is waiting. Are you ready to meet them?
